Less Plastic Challenge Day 17: Spearmint Lip Butter

Chapstick, lip balm, and lip butters are often packaged in plastic and are petroleum based, which can have a suffocating effect on the skin. I use coconut oil or shea butter because they are not derived from fossil fuels, and they provide true moisture!

Spearmint Lip Butter

I make this lip butter two ways. In the summer I use coconut oil, because it's thinner and lighter on the lips. During the winter, I make it with shea butter instead, because its consistency is thicker and it keeps the lips moist for longer. Both are fantastic!

A metal tin or glass jar

2 tablespoons coconut oil or shea butter

1 tablespoon beeswax

6-10 drops spearmint essential oil (optional)

The Steps: 1. Combine the beeswax, shea butter or coconut oil, in a double boiler, or in a bowl which you can place over a pot of boiling water. 2. Let the ingredients melt until they are completely translucent. 3. Remove from heat and stir in the essential oil. 4. Pour into a sterile glass or metal container and let set/cool. 5. Butter up your lips!

Beeswax: I use beeswax in my body care products because doing so supports the continuation of bee farming, and we rely on the bees to pollinate the planet! Beeswax is incredibly moisturizing, healing, and soothing for the skin.

Shea Butter: This incredible butter comes from the Shea tree which is predominately grown in East and West Africa. Shea butter is a wondrous food for the skin, it has anti-inflamitory properties and contains Vitamin A, which can help alleviate a number of skin conditions. Shea butter provides true moisture, and has incredible healing properties. It's important to support a fair trade shea butter, as child labor is often used otherwise.

Coconut Oil: Coconut oil benefits our body in many ways. It helps to soften up the skin, making it less dry and more supple. Coconut oil also contains Vitamin E, which is rich in antioxidants and extremely moisturizing. Coconut oil is especially healing on cracked skin and is a soothing emollient for dry skin. Coconut oil has also been called, "The anti-aging cream."

Spearmint Essential Oil: Spearmint essential oil smells amazing! It's also antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal.
