Honey Lemon Cough Syrup

Cough syrups can thankfully be found in glass instead of plastic; however, the majority of glass bottles have plastic tops, which is in my mind, heartbreaking.

"Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down in a most delightful way." Aside from Mary Poppins making cough syrup something to look forward too, making it with honey is indeed delicious, soothing, and healing.

There are two kinds of coughs. A productive cough that produces mucus and/or phlegm, and a non-productive cough that is dry and does not produce mucus or phlegm. It's important not to suppress productive coughs, as they're the body's way of clearing the air passages and lungs of foreign material and/or mucus. When we have a dry cough, it usually means that our bodies are in the first stages of a cold. If the cold or infection establishes itself in the lungs, then the body's response is to produce mucus. 

Purpose & Uses:

  • Can temporarily provide relief from cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation
  • Can help to loosen up mucus and phlegm to support productive coughs
  • can soothe throat & cough 
  • I take 2 teaspoons every 2 hours; however, I cannot provide dosing recommendations for anyone else. 

Honey Lemon Cough Syrup


1 cup raw organic local honey 

1 cup filtered drinking water

1/4 cup dried organic chamomile (optional)

2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice

1 teaspoon lemon zest

2 inches of ginger thinly sliced

The Steps: 1. Add the water, lemon zest, chamomile, and sliced ginger to small pot and cover with 1 cup water. 2. On medium heat, bring to a boil, then turn the heat down, put a lid on the pot, and let simmer/steep for 10 minutes. 3. Strain the mixture, compost the material, and set the liquid aside. 4Combine the honey and liquid in a sauce pan on medium heat and stir. 5. Add the lemon juice and stir again. Keep on heat for another 5 minutes, but don't let it boil. 6Remove the the saucepan from the heat and pour the cough syrup into a sterile glass vessel (I sterilize things with boiling water). Let cool before use. 

Storage: I store my cough syrup in the fridge.

A Bit About the Ingredients: 

Honey: Honey coats and soothes the mucus membranes in the thraot and has anti-bacterial properties. Honey can also help ease and soothe irritation caused by coughing. Using bee products supports the continuation of bee farming, and we rely on the bees to pollinate the planet. 

Lemon: Lemons have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, and are alkaline producing for the body; they help balance our bodies PH. Lemons are high in Vitamin C, which supports the immune system. Lemons act as an anti-oxidant, and are an expectorant. 

Ginger: Zingber Officinale supports an anti-inflammatory response in the body and can stimulate circulation throughout the body as well. Ginger is also an expectorant, meaning it can help to loosen and expel mucus from the lungs. Ginger has also been known to reduce pain in the throat due to cold and/or flu. 

Chamomile: M. chamomilla, also called German camomile, Roman chamomile and wild chamomile. Chamomile is anti-inflamorty and is supportive for digestion, sleep, and the reduction of stress and anxiety.
